In 1965, Dr. Boris Jancar and Dr. Milan Škof, two medical practitioners from Ljubljana, got together with their friends and decided to establish a football club for amateur players. They named it Drava Ptuj and built a stadium in Ptuj to host matches on artificial turf. The first official match was played on September 20, 1965 against a team of students from Maribor who were also playing at that time under the name of NK Maribor.

In 1967, they changed its name to KK Drava Ptuj due to sponsorship reasons and they managed to get an agreement with the Municipality of Ptuj for building a new stadium there as well as renting it out for cultural events.
