About the match
Super Rugby was established as the premier provincial rugby union competition in the Southern Hemisphere in 1996. The South African edition of the competition, commonly referred to as the Super Rugby tournament or Super Rugby season features teams from Argentina, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand in addition to local sides from three nations – The Cheetahs, Sunwolves, and the Southern Kings – making it the most international provincial competition on earth.
This Saturday, Durban will be hosting two local rugby teams in a showdown that has been dubbed the Battle of the Kings. The Sharks, who are currently on top of the log standings with eight points, will be taking on the lowly Stormers in what is expected to be a close-fought match. The two sides have had contrasting fortunes so far this season and this should make for an interesting game. The Sharks are coming off a big win over their arch-rivals, Western Province, while the Stormers were soundly defeated by them last week.
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) was founded in 1889 and is a non-profit organization that manages the game’s governing body in South Africa. The SARU is responsible for running national competitions, appointing referees, and running school rugby.
One of SARU’s top competitions is the Currie Cup. The competition is made up of six different divisions, with each team playing two fixtures against every other team in its division. The competition takes place over about seven months from late August to early May with teams receiving two points for a win and one point for a draw. At the end of all this, teams are ranked on points accumulated to determine which team will be crowned the winner.
