About the match
The NBA has been incredibly consistent in one aspect over the last few years: there are three clear-cut superpowers (Golden State, Cleveland, and San Antonio) and everyone else fighting to stay out of the cellar. Both the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets find themselves squarely in the middle of this everyone else category, which means that both teams are fighting tooth-and-nail to stay relevant as playoff hopefuls in the Eastern Conference.
Boston and Brooklyn have had a long history, which was renewed when the Celtics moved to Boston in 1957. They were division rivals in the Eastern Conference from 1957-1968, during which time they played each other four times per season. In 1968, the two teams switched conferences and their rivalry cooled off until 2013 when they were pitted against each other in an Eastern Conference Semifinal that went seven games before the Nets finally lost 96-94 in Game 7 at TD Garden. For all intents and purposes, this rivalry is back on!
The Celtics have been the best team in the Eastern Conference this season, with a record of 35-14. They are led by Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, who is expected to return from injury before the end of the regular season. The Celtics have a first-round matchup against the Chicago Bulls, where they will be heavily favored to advance to Round 2 against either Philadelphia or Washington in the East bracket.
The Brooklyn Nets are now led by D’Angelo Russell after they traded away Brook Lopez at last year’s trade deadline to the Lakers in exchange for Russell and Timofey Mozgov, but they’ve struggled mightily all season long and currently hold an 18-34 record that puts them in 12th place out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
The rivalry is back on! The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets have been two of the most exciting teams to watch in the NBA this year, but it’s going to be so much more intense when they face off against each other in person.
