Corinthians defeated Universitario de Deportes 3-1 in the second leg of the Conmebol Sudamericana round of 16 on Tuesday night at the Estadio Nacional de Lima in Peru.
The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute when midfielder Mateus Vital scored a brilliant solo goal, dribbling past several defenders and slotting the ball past Universitario goalkeeper José Carvallo.
Universitario equalized in the 28th minute when striker Enzo Gutiérrez headed in a cross from midfielder Hernán Novick from the left wing. Gutiérrez beat his marker and nodded the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
Corinthians regained the lead in the 38th minute when striker Jô converted a penalty kick after Universitario defender Federico Alonso fouled him in the box. Jô sent Carvallo the wrong way and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Corinthians sealed the victory in the 90th minute when midfielder Luan scored a stunning volley from outside the box, smashing the ball into the top left corner of the net. Carvallo had no chance to stop the shot.
Corinthians advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conmebol Sudamericana with a 5-1 aggregate win over Universitario, after winning 2-0 in the first leg in Brazil. The result ends Universitario’s impressive run in the competition, which saw them eliminate Cerro Porteño and Fénix in previous rounds.
Corinthians will face either Arsenal de Sarandí or Sporting Cristal in the next round.
