The Carolina Hurricanes (35-22-6) fell to the Buffalo Sabres (24-33-7) 2-1 in front of an announced crowd of 17,908 at PNC Arena on Thursday night. The Hurricanes had 49 shots on goal but were only able to convert two of them into goals as the Sabres’ Robin Lehner made 39 saves in his 32nd start of the season. Buffalo’s Jack Eichel scored twice for his 15th multi-goal game and also picked up an assist on Marcus Foligno’s empty netter at 18:55 of the third period.
The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Carolina Hurricanes at KeyBank Arena on Thursday. With this game being the final meeting of the season between these two teams, it was important for both teams to play well and get a win. However, it was not meant to be for either team as neither side had much of an impact on this game. The Hurricanes were without Sebastian Aho, who is one of their best players and they were also without Petr Mrazek, who has been their starter in the net for much of this season. In his place, Curtis McElhinney played and he played well enough but he simply didn’t have much help from his teammates.
The Hurricanes are on an upswing. Coming off of a shutout win against Nashville, they traveled back to Raleigh and were looking for two points against Buffalo. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
The Hurricanes came out flat and lost 4-1. They managed one goal on four shots but it was too little too late as Buffalo had already taken control of the game with three unanswered goals by the end of the first period.
Jordan Staal (5th) scored for Carolina with Sebastian Aho assisting on both Staal’s 5th and Aho’s 10th of the season.
