The rivalry between Leeds and Manchester is one of the oldest in football. In 1887, when both clubs were founding members of the Football League, they met for the first time in a friendly game. Ten years later, after meeting many times during league matches, they played each other again in a friendly match with much more intensity than before. This time around it was declared that whoever won would be crowned champions of England. Even though the game ended 0-0, Leeds had won their first and only title that year. The next day the two teams met again in a rematch at Old Trafford to crown who was actually the best team in England. Once again, Leeds won 1-0 and took home their first-ever major trophy as well as bragging rights over Manchester United.
